The Gift of Art

The Gift of Art: Jamie Gleason
By: Harmony Beck

Have you ever wondered why Jamie Gleason’s passion for art is always based on the fantasy and scifi persuasion? As a kid Jamie was sort of a tomboy and found that dinosaurs would be a fun animal to draw; little did she know that it would start one of the biggest parts of who she is. From dinosaurs she became interested in birds, because of the theory that dinosaurs evolved into birds. After birds she started to draw dragons because dinosaurs with wings are dragons. This is how Jamie’s love for fantasy all began. Her life, however, started on September 17, 1989 when she was born to John and Shelly Gleason. She has lived in Bailey her whole life and is just waiting for college to start. Jamie’s after school activities include reading a good book with a nice cup of tea or hot chocolate, playing video games, and watching movies. Jamie gets ideas from the books she reads, the video games she plays and movies she watches to create works of art. For Jamie, art is a major stress reliever and when school gets difficult she can easily fill a sketch book in a month. Each detailed piece of art can take anywhere from a day to a week while smaller and less detailed pieces like a sketch can take her from five minutes to five hours. Art will always be present in Jamie’s life because it is more than a hobby it’s a part of her. Although Jamie’s art is outstanding, her first choice after high school is to start Vet Tech School, and her second option is art school.

Q. What first inspired you to start drawing?
A. Well my mom was an artist, so she stimulated me to draw like her.

Q. What was the first picture that you drew?
A. I started drawing bubble dinosaurs and sharks.

Q. At what age did you start drawing?
A. I was about four. I would draw these bubble dinosaurs and sharks.

Q. What mediums do you like to use the most?
A. I like pencils and colored pencils for sketching. Then for painting I like to use acrylic and water colors. I enjoy painting more then sketching, but a painting takes longer then a sketch does.

Q. Who is your remodel artist(s)?
A. I really like all fantasy artists like Amy Brown and Circuelo

Q. Have you entered any art contests? If so what was your biggest prize?
A. Yes I’ve entered about twenty contests and the biggest prize I have gotten was about twenty five dollars.

Q. Do you like it when people judge your work?
A. Yea I like to hear what people think about my art. It gives me a chance to improve it.

A Special Thanks!

Loveland Ski Area

Loveland Ski Area

By: Tyler Graves

My many visits to Loveland have always been awesome. For some unknown reason, this current ski/snowboard season has been really bad. By bad I don’t mean the snow, I’m talking about the people, the non locals. I’ve been to Loveland since I was 8 years old and it has always been my second home. I go there so much most of the employees know my dad and I, and everyone has always been laid back and cool. Not once have they treated anyone like a number, but rather a person. Lately there have been so many non-local people up there; it has made the experience drop. All of these new people litter, have no respect for anybody and complain about lack of luxury and snow, all of the locals tell these stuck-up people to pack their bags and leave, it’s that simple. Me personally I think it’s the fact that Loveland has the better snow, by that I mean it has ice, chop, powder, anything you can imagine even the weather is awesome, it is usually minus fifty at the top and minus twenty at the bottom on there average days. Although, snow wise, when compared to Vail, Copper, A-basin etc it is better, but nothing compared to the western slope. Rumor has it that Loveland is under new ownership. The previous owner Otto tried to get his son to take over the business, but his son chose not to. Supposedly Loveland is owned by some new guy named Chet Uphal. Well the rumor was a fraud. Chet actually owned the place after Otto, but as of January 26, 2008 Chet passed away from pancreatic cancer. Rumor had it that he sold the place to someone else when that is entirely not true. Chet left Loveland Ski Area to his family, which they have no intention of selling it any time soon. One other idea that might spur the idea for non-locals to choose Loveland rather than the big mountain resorts could be the fact that it is a lot closer and cheaper than the other resorts. With gas prices being the way they are, three dollars a gallon, not very many skiers and boarders can afford to go to Vail and Winter Park. On top of that, they way the American economy is right now, that could also be a major factor in everyone’s funding. I really don’t care if other people want to ride the mountain, but they need to share it and respect it all at the same time. If that’s the case and they cant handle it “don’t ruin it for everyone else!”

Consumer Electronics

What's Next

By:Dylan Rompf

The world of technology is an amazing place that fascinates millions. Early in January, the latest update to this world was revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show 2008, or CES. The show is held annually every January at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Everything from the latest cell phone to ultra high-definition, flat screen TV’s almost capable of being pinned to your wall with a thumbtack were debuted. Companies spared no expense to get their product out either, with many paying millions of dollars for their booth alone. Its sole purpose is to attract casual passerby’s attention for long enough to draw them in. This show was designed to challenge companies to develop the latest and greatest technologies and systems to be available to the public in the near future, so what can we expect this year?
Many new gadgets and gizmos were on display, but there were a few that caught the eyes of many. One of these was the Motorola ROKR E8 cell phone and mp3 player. Part of the main attractions to the phone is its revolutionary keypad that shows only relevant buttons for the application in use. Taking a picture? Zoom, capture, flash, and other camera buttons are easily accessible and virtually impossible to confuse with cell phone or mp3 functions while they’re hidden from view. This phone would certainly have an easy learning curve for the less tech-savvy people out there.
Also coming to a store near you, eventually anyway, is the Bug Labs “lego gadget.” This device is an open-ended handheld with different attachments to allow camera, mp3, LCD screen, even GPS. The device allows the users to program to their own specifications and will have a website to allow third party applications to be downloaded through a computer. The total freedom of the device allows for a multitude of functions and even combinations of functions, for example, how useful would a GPS enabled digital camera be?
CES is annually one of the most exciting conventions to benefit the future. Established in 1967 in New York, it has since brought many staples into our society. Remember the VCR? It was first seen at the 1970 CES convention in Las Vegas. The CD player, Camcorder, and even HDTV (high definition Television) was first seen at the CES trade show. CES will continue to bring the latest gadgets, home theatre, and technology to your home for years to come, all you have to do is wait.

Valentines Love Potion

A Treat for your Sweetheart

By: Harmony Beck

Makes 4 to 6 parfaits
This recipe produces a chocolate custard pudding, rater loose in texture, but rich in flavor.

Recipe courtesy Warren Brown

Chocolate Pudding
INGREDIENTS

2 cups of milk
1 vanilla bean (1 tsp. of vanilla)
3 large eggs
5 egg yolks
¼ cup potato starch
24 ounces cocoa powder
¼ cup all-purpose flour
4 ounces unsalted butter

Directions

Bring the milk and vanilla to a boil in a large heavy-bottomed pot.
Meanwhile, whisk the eggs, egg yolks, potato starch, sugar, cocoa powder, and flour together to blend
Remove the milk pan from heat once it boils. With the whisk in the center of the cocoa mixture, slowly pour the hot milk in and begin to combine the two mixtures. Finish pouring the rest of the milk in and whisk to fully incorporate.
Return mixture to the pot and cook over medium heat, slowly whisking constantly to prevent scorching, The ingredients have a low burning temperature and will scorch easily so keep the whisk moving. Cook until large bubbles slowly rise to the surface of the pot.
The pastry cream temperature should be approximately 200 degrees F. Remove pot from the heat and whisk in the butter. Remove vanilla bean from pudding. Pour pudding into heat resistant bowl and cover with plastic wrap, making sure the plastic wrap touches the surface of the pudding to prevent a skin from forming.

Whipped Cream

2 cups of heavy cream
2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Combine all the ingredients in a mixer bowl and whip on medium speed. Stop the mixer when you have medium peaks and finish whipping manually with whisk to preserve the whipped cream's luscious texture.
Raspberry Puree
10 ounces (1 bag) frozen raspberries
½ cup sugar
Combine the frozen berries and sugar in a pot and bring to a gentle simmer. Cook gently for 5 minutes. Strain the berries to remove the seeds. Put the puree into a squeeze bottle for easy pouring.
Ganache, optional
1 cup heavy cream
½ cup bittersweet chocolate
Fresh Raspberries

Bring the heavy cream to a boil and immediately pour over the chocolate. Stir to combine. Allow to cool.
Assembly
Load pudding and whipped cream into separate pastry bags. Pipe in layers into tall sundae glasses, starting with chocolate pudding, then the whipped cream, raspberry puree and fresh berries. Repeat as needed and top the parfait with more whipped cream and fresh berries.
Drizzle chocolate Ganache across the top for extra indulgence!

No Competition, the way of the future

No competition, the way of the future
By Evan Campbell

All sports have the sore-loser; there is no question about it. But why do people continue to say inappropriate things when they lose? Is it possible that the world is turning over to everyone being a winner i.e. a tie? After the Divisional AFC playoff game between New England Patriots and Jacksonville Jaguars with Jacksonville losing, a safety for the Jaguars, Reggie Nelson, said "He ain't all that … He's all right," putting down New England Quarterback, Tom Brady, who set the NFL record for the most completions in a playoff game with 26 of 28. However the passing is done short or long it still is a record, why say it was not that great? In Massachusetts certain soccer teams have banned keeping score in games with ten year old children. Question, don’t kids that age keep score no matter what? Yes, it is what they do. Have you ever played a sport and wondered what the score is, normally another teammate tells you. What are you doing, keeping score? Ah wait, you can’t do that because it shows that you are winning or losing. Sports are not the only problem when it comes to competition.
Some school districts have banned spelling bees, Honor roll, and even games that have a winner and a loser. Do not blame the school boards for it, blame the parents. Have your parents ever said to you ok, no matter what happens in this game or event that has a competition, that if you lose you’re not a loser but a runner up. Honor roll rewards the students that put forth great work; not puts down the students who do not care. Gym class has games that force students to exercise. Every class has a weak person and a strong person. The strong play games like dodge ball and the weaker students play games they feel is right for them. No one forces the students to play what everyone else plays. If you want to play for fun, then it is alright to do so, but the game is going to have a winner and a loser. But with anti-competition people out there like Alfie Kohn thinking that competition makes our children’s self-esteem weak, as he says “competition is to self-esteem as sugar is to teeth.” If you do not get it, it means is it is bad for anyone to have any involvement in a competition. Doesn’t it really make them weak?
Some of America’s famous people failed the first, second, and third time trying. Of course some succeed the first time, but why did those people fail? They did not beat out the competition or stand out above all the rest. We all know that President Abraham Lincoln was one of the greatest presidents this nation had; however he had to compete to gain an education when his parents were uneducated. He failed in school but he didn’t give up, he went on to self educated himself. But he didn’t stop there he went to try for a spot in the Illinois General Assembly but failed there too. But he didn’t give up. He went on to run for president. And he won to become this nation’s 16th president.
On the local front, seniors from Platte Canton High School will most likely apply to colleges that you want to attend, and regrettably you get rejected. What just happened? Ding, Ding, Ding, we have a winner. Competition is out there you can not get around it. So why should you hide from the very idea that is competition. Colleges look for those who stand out compared to the rest. Why ask that it is a wrong idea to have, because they would not want to spend money and time on someone who does not stand out from all the rest. Most of high school seniors plan to attend a higher education school. However some out there have A’s, B’s, and some C’s for grades, But the college will accept the A’s and B’s students before the C’s student. Well for that C student, most likely would feel horrible about the fact that they failed. Probably they will pick themselves up and go to the school that accepted them. Wake up after college, those who made it through will go into the nation’s work force and end up wanting a job. With your college degree gives a fighting chance, employers will judge between all the people applying for that certain job. Some lucky person will get the job while the others get the nice letter saying sorry you did not get the job. Winning and losing is apart of life so why shield yourself from it. Why get into the thinking of a tie when college, life, and sports have competition. Ending with a tie in meaning means no Football, Baseball, Hockey, Olympics, and no enjoyment of hey I’m better then you in your favorite activity. But it doesn’t stop there either.
Board games too would be affected too by this rash wave of anti-competition activists. Board games have a winner and a loser; it is a part of the way they work. In chess for example both sides try to capture the king. The side that does is the winner. If there is no winner or loser, then how do you play the game? A world without competition is a world without games, a world without people feeling good about them selves when they win. Competition is in our nature, our blood, and life. So to say competition is wrong for the human self, is just wrong.

February 8th
Fool’s Gold

Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson, Donald Sutherland, and Ewen Bremner.
This movie is the triple threat. It’s a romantic, an action, and comedy all in one. Some may say it is a Romancetionedy. Ok no one says that, but this movie looks worth the $7.25. Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey bring a sense of hope and adventure to the big screen in their pursuit of treasure hunting. If you want to be in the spirit of innocence for at least two hours then be sure to see Fool’s Gold.

The Hottie and the Nottie
PG-13 Starring
Paris Hilton, Joel David Moore, Christine Lakin, and Johann Urb.
In case anyone forgot what Paris Hilton did on her off time from clubbing and going to parties, the new film The Hottie and the Nottie is a perfect example of her attempting to act. The title of this movie pretty much sums up the whole 97 minutes. When the main character, Nate Copper, gets a second chance at dating his childhood crush his chances are slim because she won’t date until her ugly best friend gets a date. The preview for this movie brings a little sense of curiosity to the average person. Who knows maybe Paris will get nominated for an Oscar? Maybe this movie will be rejected by the entire human race. Whatever your decision is I am sure that Paris needs a new purse, so go check out The Hottie and the Nottie.

Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins
PG-13 Starring
Martin Lawrence, Louis C.K., James Earl Jones, and Cedric the Entertainer.

In Bruges
R Starring
Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Ralph Fiennes, and Clemence Poesy.
Even though this movie is rated R,, I will personally be seeing the Colin Farrell flick with a person of 21 years of age or older. I have seen the previews for this movie and am extremely excited to see it. In Bruges is about a hit man that is stuck in Bruges a.k.a. Belgium to await orders from his boss. Mean while, he is stuck trying to blend in and be a tourist in a city that bores him to death. So for all you seventeen year olds or 15+ with connections with a 21 year old make sure you experience the action comedy that is In Bruges.

February 14th
Definitely, Maybe
PG-13 Starring
Ryan Reynolds, Isla Fisher, Derek Luke, and Abigail Breslin.
For any of you light hearted romantics looking for a good Valentine’s Day movie look no further. Definitely, Maybe is an adorable movie about a father daughter duo that is just trying to find what is missing in their lives. After an overview of how the two parents fell in love, the father and daughter team discover that the missing element is young Mya’s (the daughter) mother. To find out how this sweet story ends watch Definitely, Maybe coming out on Valentine’s Day.

Jumper
PG-13 Starring
Hayden Christensen, Teresa Palmer, Samuel L. Jackson, Rachel Bilson and Jamie Bell.
Whether you’re looking for a date movie for Valentine’s Day or just a good movie to check out, this is that movie. Jumper will take you into a world where the idea of teleporting will become a reality for one man, and that there are always consequences. I highly doubt that this movie will disappoint any of its viewers. This movie is absolutely a must see for February. I am for sure going to see this movie and I hope you will too.

The Spiderwick Chronicles
PG Starring
Freddie Highmore, Sarah Bolger, David Strathairn, Mary-Louise Parker, more cast
Even though we’re in High School, I think The Spiderwick Chronicles is the perfect movie to venture back to when life as a kid was much simpler. This movie is about a family moving into their uncles house and the kids discovering a whole other fantasy world. So take a step out of bounds and journey to the mystical world of The Spiderwick Chronicles.

Step Up 2: In the Streets
PG-13 Starring
Briana Evigan, Robert Hoffman, Telisha Shaw, and Adam G. Sevani.
Whoever enjoyed Step Up the original knows that Step Up 2 can never be the same, but that’s not the position of this movie. As sequels go this one is looking like it will be a great dance movie. This Step Up looks a little funnier than the first movie. We now find the story is about Tyler Gage’s little sister Andie and how she has grown up and now joined the Maryland School of The Arts. She goes through different events, but dancing remains her passion. This movie is full of comedy, dancing and a good time

Girls Swim

PC Swimmers Start off 2008 Successfully
By: Kyle Grabowski

For the few of you that know, we have a girl’s swim team and they have performed well thus far this year. On January 10 the girls won their meet against Englewood 91-86. As far as individual wins went, Haley May won the 200 IM (Individual Medley) with a time of 2:35.46, Sydney Seifert took the 50 Freestyle at 31.44, Jessica Badaracco finished the 100 Butterfly nearly twenty-six seconds ahead of her next competitor as well as prevailing in the 100 Breaststroke, and Katie Ahl finished first in the 100 Backstroke. Both the 200 Medley Relay and 200 Freestyle relay were won by the team of Katie Ahl, Jesse Badaracco, Hayley May and Sydney Seifert. In short, out of the ten events, PC won seven. How would one follow up such astounding individual and team success? By placing fourth at the Summit Invitational, that’s how. Both 200 relay teams won as well as Hayley May (200 IM) and Jessica Badaracco (100 Butterfly, 100 Breaststroke). It can be depressing to think that we have such as successful team that rarely gets any support. On most nights the gym is filled for volleyball and basketball games while there is rarely room in the football stadium, but what about the pool? It isn’t often that one hears, “Hey are you going to the swim meet tomorrow?” That’s just wrong. We support all of our other sports but not this one. Prove me wrong by supporting the girls at the Husky Invite on Saturday.

Go girls go!!

The Platte Canyon Husky Girl’s Basketball program hasn’t had the best luck in the past few years. This year they are looking a lot better. Coach Erica Fulton is building a great team and is taking steps to the top. The team is larger than last year and the attitude is way more positive. So far we have won 2 out of 6 league games for varsity. The team captains are: Junior, Sarah Farson # 3 and Junior, Kelly Haase #11. Overall, the husky girls are keeping their heads high and are doing an awesome job. On January 10th, the husky girls took on DSST at home. The varsity girls lost 30 to 41. They played a really hard game and put up a fight. Although it was a loss, the team has improved a lot and should be expecting more wins. Their defense stayed strong but the girls are working on improving their offensive plays. All of the girls did a good job at getting back. DSST scored most of the points by foul shots. Our husky girls are working on preventing the fouls. Kelly Haase hit her first three point shot in the game and also the first one of the season! The crowd was cheering and jumping up and down for our husky ladies. The junior varsity girls played extremely well and got their first win of the year. The final score was 18 to 17. On January 12th, the varsity girls played at Academy for the second time. Currently Academy is ranked number one in our league. They kept the score at 0 to 0 for the first quarter. That alone shows how much the girls have improved. The intensity for that quarter was great, and the girls kept the husky crowd cheering loudly. The varsity defense is doing an awesome job at getting back and hustling. The final score to their game was 28 to 41. Their offense is getting a lot better. The girl’s junior varsity had a rough game. They didn’t win but they put up a fight at the end. The score was 2 to 38 with Taylre Beckmann putting up the two points. On January 15th, there was a game on husky territory for the girls and boys against Clear Creek. The girl’s varsity played a hard fourth quarter with the final score being 26 to 32. They picked up their intensity and almost won the game. The girls have been working on handling the lead. They learned the difference between playing to win a game and playing to not lose. Currently, Clear Creek is ahead of Platte by one spot. There was no JV game. On January 18th, the girls had their first varsity victory against Sheridan. They had desire to win and they more then deserved it. The score was 32 to 24 with Caity Milligan being the lead scorer. There was great effort put into that game and they earned it. The girl's are doing an amazing job. They also showed great sportsmanship. Girl’s basketball is taking steps to the top and they are building a great team. The JV game wasn’t their best. They kept their heads high and are learning to have desire. On January 22nd, there was an away game at Bennett. The varsity score was 39 to 60. They started off slow but came back in the second quarter. The girls tied the second half points and almost caught all the way up to the Bennett Tigers. The lead scorer for the varsity girls was Caity Milligan. Great Job Caity! Bennett girl’s basketball is currently ranked number three in our league. For the Husky girls to play that close of a game with them is showing a huge step. The girls JV got their points in the double digits, which are showing so much improvement. On January 25th, the girls took on Arrupe Jesuit at home. The final score was 42 to 40 with Caity Milligan shooting the winning shot at the buzzer. She had a career high of 23 points. Kelly Haase had 19 rebounds and Caity had 12. The crowd was going wild and it was a really fun game to watch. This is the second win for varsity. So far, we are 2 for 6 of our league games. Overall, this season has had its ups and downs but the girl’s are staying strong. There are 6 more games to make it to the top and they can definitely pull it off. The next home game is on February 19th against Pinnacle. It’ll be the last home game of the season. Good Luck ladies!

Huskie Boys Basketball

Our Huskie Boys By:

Jalene Stringfellow

On January 10th, 2008, our junior varsity boy’s basketball team played against DSST on husky territory. The JV coaches Mr. Carpenter and Cory Bartoli have been drilling the boys in practice to get them ready for the game. They played a great game and put up a fight, but it was not enough to win the game. Their spirits were high and they never lost confidence. The boys had an abundance of energy from the start of the game to the end of the game. They will have to work hard in practice next week, but they can do it. Keep up the hard work and good luck at your next game boys! Later that night our varsity boy’s team played. PC started off strong and finished the game with a win. Coach Carlstrom worked the boys in practice and all their hard work showed in the game. Their offensive and defensive team worked with each other to help lead our team to a victory. The boys passed the ball, communicated with each other, and fought hard for the rebounds. We had a few technical fouls, but I think they boys have learned from that. Good job Varsity boys and good luck at your next game. Keep up the work! We didn’t walk away with a win but we did put up a battle against Clear Creek on January 15th, 2008 at home. The Varsity team consists of Blaze Eisele, Ben Wegener, Cassidy Grigg, Nick Achziger, A.J Melillo, Dom Harris, Karl Griebel, D.J Brown, Daniel Day, Nick Wiford, and Michael Clark. The game was a back and fourth game for the lead. At half time we were up by 5 points with the fans going crazy. We thought that we would walk away with the victory against Clear Creek. It was the top of the fourth quarter and we were still in the lead. Our cheerleaders and fans were so pumped up. The game was neck and neck. Clear Creek got ahead of us by 3 points but PCHS came back. Then we started to foul and that’s when the game turned around for our Husky boys. Clear Creek kept shooting and finally they were in the lead. We could not catch up with the other team. We had scored some points but it was still not enough. The final score was 48 to 57. Even though it was a loss for the boy’s team, they put up a hard fight and never gave up. They pushed there selves to the max. Good job boys and better luck next time! Friday January 18th, 2008 the boy’s basketball team played against the Sheridan Rams. It started out as a slow game but over time action grew. PCHS played hard but it wasn’t good enough to walk away with the win. The final score was 60 to 76. We started the game with us being in the lead. The lead started to go back and fourth between the Huskies and the Rams. Platte lost the lead after the second quarter. After they received a pep talk from Coach Carlstrom, they started to come back. The fans were going nuts; screaming, cheering, jumping up and down for our varsity boy’s. You could feel the intensity as if you were standing on the court. If you looked into one of the players eyes, you could see a little anger and a lot of competitiveness. It was not one of their best played games, but they tried their hardest. Nice job Huskies and good luck at your next game! The boys Varsity basketball team has had a long and hard season so far. They have won two games which were against Academy with a score of 74 to 68 and a victory against DSST with a score of 73 to 57. They are 2 and 10 for their overall record and for the league they are 2 and 6. The team has had a total of 121 assists, 131 steals, 14 blocked shots, 128 offensive rebounds, 218 defensive rebounds, 207 two point shots and 55 three point shots. The top 3 scoring players are Blaze Eisele (17.7), Aj Melillo (9.8), and Ben Wegener (8.5). The top three 3 point shooters are Aj Melillo (1.6), Cassidy Grigg (.8) and Ben Wegener (.8). The top 3 block leaders are Daniel Day (.4), Ben Wegener (.4), and Aj Melillo (.2). Their top 3 rebounders are Daniel Day (5), Ben Wegener (5), and Blaze Eisele (4.4). The top stealers are Ben Wegener (3.3), Aj Millio (2), and Blaze Eisele (1.7). The top assist players are Ben Wegener (3.5), Blaze Eisele (1.9), and Daniel Day (1.5). Michael Clark is a freshmen on Varsity and has made two 3 pointers. Dj Brown is another freshman on Varsity who has made one steal. For league Blaze Eisele is 2nd for scoring, Ben Wegener is 5th for blocks, 4th for steals, and 3rd for assists, and Aj is 3rd for three point shots.

Wrestling

A Dead Sport Still?

By: Jalene Stringfellow

The Wrestling team is back and alive at Platte Canyon High School for the 2008 season. Last year in 2007 there was no wrestling team. They were not able to raise enough money and did not have enough funds so the school board decided to disband the wrestling team. Coach Gary Rhoads this year was able to change the school boards mind and let wrestling come back and be a part of PCHS. The team this year consists of 14 team members. The Huskies have 2 seniors: Travis Little and Kane Egan, 5 juniors: Alex Jimenez, Jon Bellomy, Zac Beaman, Shelby Edwards, and Eric Ivarson, 3 sophomores: Trevor Kirby, Devlin Pitts, and Seth Greenwald, and 4 freshmen: Zach Schaeffer, Cory Todd, Kevin Appenzeller, and Miranda Ivarson. This year on the team there is a freshmen girl named Miranda Ivarson. The captains this season are junior Zac Beaman and junior Shelby Edwards. I was able to sit down with Junior Jon Bellomy for an interview. This is his first year on the wrestling team and it has not been easy for him. He say’s it has been a huge challenge but with his teammates support he has been able to become a stronger person and not give up. He say’s it is mostly a physically enduring sport. Since he has started wrestling for the school it has helped him get in better shape and so far he has lost 21 pounds. Many people think that the wrestlers do not run, but in fact they run a lot. Almost every day they run 15 laps on the bottom floor of PCHS and on the top floor of PCHS. On the top floor they jog and on the bottom floor they sprint.

Never Too Big for Bailey- Flobots

Where Are The Flobots Now?
Sofi Sasser

The Flobots are not unfamiliar to PCHS, and with every radio play on Channel 93.3; they become even more familiar to the rest of Denver . “Handlebars” can now not only be heard walking through the halls of Platte Canyon , but also when you get in the car and turn on the radio. Over December these seven devoted members awaited anxiously for the results on whether or not they would be making it one step closer to affecting the rest of the world as they have Platte . The band is made up of Brer Rabbit, Jonny 5, Andy Guerrero, Mackenzie Roberts, Kenny O, Joe Ferrone, and Jesse Walker. Even after this huge accomplishment, the fine people who call themselves by the Flobots have remained extremely level headed.

“Have we made it big? I'm not sure we have in the traditional sense of the phrase. However, there are hundreds of bands in Denver , and we have had a lot of local success that very few bands get to experience. We are very humbled by the response we have received from the music community in the last few months,” says Jesse, Flobot 101 and bass player.
Just how humble this incredible band really is doesn’t show in this response alone. The Home Town for the Holidays contest (held by area 93.3), winnings consisted of one thousand dollars, the chance to play at a Colorado Mammoth Game, and to open for bands at this year’s Not so Silent Night (held in the first week of December). These two very large live shows may be one of the biggest rewards of all, Jesse says, “Live shows are unlike anything I have ever experienced. We take a lot of pride in our live show, and we pour everything we have into them. A good show feels something akin to getting a full body massage on a race horse while being shot out of a cannon.”
It is no wonder that Flobots won out of every band that had applied in Colorado , their sound is like no one else’s out there. “When the band began we all shared a common desire to push musical boundaries. We never set out to be a pure hip-hop act, or rock band, or funk band, we simply wanted to be a group that found itself on the frontier of it's genre… In short, our inspiration represents the output of the summation of our lives. We have each had a unique experience through life that guides who we are and how we express ourselves. The creative process of each member is deeply internal, and I'm not sure we fully understand it,” explains Jesse. The message they send, along with the sound and energy is from the heart, their beliefs, so is there a deeper meaning to “no W” other than the spelling of the name? “There has always been confusion surrounding the spelling of our name. The "W" was often mistakenly inserted when we first formed. As it happens, the policies of the current administration are not ones we favor. When writing this song, the double entendre of "no W" was too good to pass up.”

Flobots have yet to be signed with a label but have signed with a manager and national booking agency. Thank you to Jesse Walker and the rest of the band for taking the time to remember Platte Canyon . Snow Riders

Snow Riders
By: Dylan Rompf

How does they ski team do it? Leaving at 5:00 am the athletes scarcely open there eyes enough to get there bearings strait while they load a white SUV in the Conoco/Loaf’n’Jug parking lot with bags, skis, poles, boots, and especially a pillow for the long trip ahead. This was the scene three hours before the Beaver Creek slalom on January 11. The morning did not start out in the teams favor after the school districts SUV, used for transporting the ski team to races and practices, failed to start with a bad battery and a low gas tank, already late.
However, the day was not lost and upon reaching the hill, almost frazzled from being hard pressed to make registration, Coach Bob Feroldi is in rare form. Thinking ahead to the registration, the race to come, and how he will handle close to sixteen teenagers at a high end ski resort is about the equivalent of balancing a tray of fine china and riding down stairs on a unicycle. He seems to handle it well, telling the racers to change into their skin tight “speed suits” and be out on the hill before the lifts open.
After riding the main chairlift from the base of Beaver Creek resort to about three fourths up the 11,000 foot mountain and well above the race run. The racers must slip, or scrape the excess snow from the crusty base layer beneath, sometimes even slipping more than once to maintain the ideal surface for using the sharpened edges of their slalom skis.
When it comes time to race the athletes must strip down to their racings suits, some more colorful than others, but all of them are anything but warm, and enter a roped off area around the starting gate. The starting gate is not at all a glamorous thing, just a stiff rubber “stick” that starts the racers time when moved or brushed by as the racers begin their run. Although a Slalom course is almost self explanatory while it is being ran, a slalom course is as confusing to the casual onlooker as it is to the racer in the gate. This adds to the already abounding nerves of the racers.
After running a course successfully the racer is allowed a second run. Almost all of the Platte Canyon racers finished their first run, but Nathan Smith, a senior, was DQ ed (short for disqualified) for crashing and losing a ski near the end of his first run. The second run was not as successful for the boys, all but three were DQed when they missed a confusing gate setup or crashed somewhere else on the course. Fortunately one of our boys, Kenny Sause, qualified in the top one third of 147 others for state, congratulations Kenny.
Beaver Creek Slalom was overall not as successful as the team had hoped, but assuredly a worthwhile experience for all of the participants.
