Fiji Water and a Suffering Country
By: Nick Wiford
The country of Fiji has the Fiji Water bottling company located there. Ironically, the nation has trouble getting water for themselves. The country has a tiny population. Fiji is a series of over 300 islands. They have a GDP per capita of $5,500. Although the islands are surrounded by water it is salt water and they do not have a useable amount of fresh water. The people have to ration their water use and many days have to go without water. At the same time David Gilmour is raking in the money. Fiji water is found in grocery stores and gas stations and is the most expensive water sold at an average retailer. The company sales water that is just water, with nothing special about the water except that it is bottled in Fiji. I would understand if the water was some miracle water or tasted amazing. But, I have tried it and do not tell a difference between Fiji and Aquafina, who recently was under fire for taking tap water and then filtering it over and over. Next time you pay over $2 for a bottle of Fiji water remember a few things such as the fact that you could have bought a bottle of Aquafina or Dasani for well under the price of Fiji by about 50 cents or more. Also, think about the people in Fiji who can not afford fresh water to survive.
