Wrestling

A Dead Sport Still?

By: Jalene Stringfellow

The Wrestling team is back and alive at Platte Canyon High School for the 2008 season. Last year in 2007 there was no wrestling team. They were not able to raise enough money and did not have enough funds so the school board decided to disband the wrestling team. Coach Gary Rhoads this year was able to change the school boards mind and let wrestling come back and be a part of PCHS. The team this year consists of 14 team members. The Huskies have 2 seniors: Travis Little and Kane Egan, 5 juniors: Alex Jimenez, Jon Bellomy, Zac Beaman, Shelby Edwards, and Eric Ivarson, 3 sophomores: Trevor Kirby, Devlin Pitts, and Seth Greenwald, and 4 freshmen: Zach Schaeffer, Cory Todd, Kevin Appenzeller, and Miranda Ivarson. This year on the team there is a freshmen girl named Miranda Ivarson. The captains this season are junior Zac Beaman and junior Shelby Edwards. I was able to sit down with Junior Jon Bellomy for an interview. This is his first year on the wrestling team and it has not been easy for him. He say’s it has been a huge challenge but with his teammates support he has been able to become a stronger person and not give up. He say’s it is mostly a physically enduring sport. Since he has started wrestling for the school it has helped him get in better shape and so far he has lost 21 pounds. Many people think that the wrestlers do not run, but in fact they run a lot. Almost every day they run 15 laps on the bottom floor of PCHS and on the top floor of PCHS. On the top floor they jog and on the bottom floor they sprint.
