The Platte Canyon Husky Girl’s Basketball program hasn’t had the best luck in the past few years. This year they are looking a lot better. Coach Erica Fulton is building a great team and is taking steps to the top. The team is larger than last year and the attitude is way more positive. So far we have won 2 out of 6 league games for varsity. The team captains are: Junior, Sarah Farson # 3 and Junior, Kelly Haase #11. Overall, the husky girls are keeping their heads high and are doing an awesome job. On January 10th, the husky girls took on DSST at home. The varsity girls lost 30 to 41. They played a really hard game and put up a fight. Although it was a loss, the team has improved a lot and should be expecting more wins. Their defense stayed strong but the girls are working on improving their offensive plays. All of the girls did a good job at getting back. DSST scored most of the points by foul shots. Our husky girls are working on preventing the fouls. Kelly Haase hit her first three point shot in the game and also the first one of the season! The crowd was cheering and jumping up and down for our husky ladies. The junior varsity girls played extremely well and got their first win of the year. The final score was 18 to 17. On January 12th, the varsity girls played at Academy for the second time. Currently Academy is ranked number one in our league. They kept the score at 0 to 0 for the first quarter. That alone shows how much the girls have improved. The intensity for that quarter was great, and the girls kept the husky crowd cheering loudly. The varsity defense is doing an awesome job at getting back and hustling. The final score to their game was 28 to 41. Their offense is getting a lot better. The girl’s junior varsity had a rough game. They didn’t win but they put up a fight at the end. The score was 2 to 38 with Taylre Beckmann putting up the two points. On January 15th, there was a game on husky territory for the girls and boys against Clear Creek. The girl’s varsity played a hard fourth quarter with the final score being 26 to 32. They picked up their intensity and almost won the game. The girls have been working on handling the lead. They learned the difference between playing to win a game and playing to not lose. Currently, Clear Creek is ahead of Platte by one spot. There was no JV game. On January 18th, the girls had their first varsity victory against Sheridan. They had desire to win and they more then deserved it. The score was 32 to 24 with Caity Milligan being the lead scorer. There was great effort put into that game and they earned it. The girl's are doing an amazing job. They also showed great sportsmanship. Girl’s basketball is taking steps to the top and they are building a great team. The JV game wasn’t their best. They kept their heads high and are learning to have desire. On January 22nd, there was an away game at Bennett. The varsity score was 39 to 60. They started off slow but came back in the second quarter. The girls tied the second half points and almost caught all the way up to the Bennett Tigers. The lead scorer for the varsity girls was Caity Milligan. Great Job Caity! Bennett girl’s basketball is currently ranked number three in our league. For the Husky girls to play that close of a game with them is showing a huge step. The girls JV got their points in the double digits, which are showing so much improvement. On January 25th, the girls took on Arrupe Jesuit at home. The final score was 42 to 40 with Caity Milligan shooting the winning shot at the buzzer. She had a career high of 23 points. Kelly Haase had 19 rebounds and Caity had 12. The crowd was going wild and it was a really fun game to watch. This is the second win for varsity. So far, we are 2 for 6 of our league games. Overall, this season has had its ups and downs but the girl’s are staying strong. There are 6 more games to make it to the top and they can definitely pull it off. The next home game is on February 19th against Pinnacle. It’ll be the last home game of the season. Good Luck ladies!
